Problem Nail Advice & Treatments on the Central Coast

Problem Nails

Ingrown Nails can be caused by:

·      Incorrect cutting technique or picking of nails

·      Trauma or injury to the nail

·      Pressure from poorly fitting shoes

·      Unusual nail shapes

Conservative treatment of ingrowing toenails is painless and usually only one visit is required.

Surgical Treatment: Chronic or recurring ingrown toenails may require a simple surgical procedure using local anaesthetic which removes the offending piece of nail permanently.

This is achieved by sterilising the area of nail matrix where the problematic nail is coming from.

Fungal Nails are often diagnosed incorrectly and are therefore treated incorrectly causing more problems.

Fungal nail infections are highly transmissible, attending nail salons or sharing shower facilities are common examples of where infection can occur

A fungal nail will usually appear with areas of:

·      Yellow/Green or brownish discolouration

·      Thickened or brittle/crumbling

·      Unsightly lines or unevenness

·      Accumulated areas of debris underneath the nail

Topical creams and nail paints are time consuming and often ineffective.

Oral medications are more effective but can have many side effects and interact with other medications.

Laser Therapy can be effective but is also painful and expensive.

Pact Therapy: PACT stands for Photodynamic Therapy. It uses a combination of light and a specific gel, that when combined destroys the walls of the fungal cell, safely & effectively killing the microorganism without causing pain, trauma or discomfort.

Fungal Infections

Treating fungal infections can be complex and challenging and are one of the most common diseases that affect toenails. Common symptoms include yellow-coloured and thickened toenails or those that appear white and chalky.

It is important to point out that over-the-counter lacquer treatments are costly and ineffective. Your GP can prescribe oral medication, but these often have side effects and are not recommended for most patients taking other prescribed medication. Laser therapy is another alternative, but this can be quite painful in addition to being very expensive.

Angela Green Podiatry use PACT therapy podiatry treatments to banish your fungal nail infections. The great news is that no drugs, lasers, or acids are used in PACT therapy, unlike most alternatives. Our podiatry treatments use the interaction of light with photosensitive agents to produce an energy transfer and local chemical effect to ensure fungal microorganisms are destroyed safely and successfully without causing any pain or discomfort.
